In 2015, the Downs Committee asked the City Design Group of Bristol City Council to produce a Place and Movement Framework for the Clifton and Durdham Downs. This proposed a number of scenarios for improving walking cycling and key recreational facilities for Downs users. Nothing came of these proposals.
In 2019, Bristol City Council proposed improving the walking and cycling routes alongside Westbury Road as part of the pending A4018 improvements. This, along with the proposal from Cycle Sunday to create a Leisure Loop around the western side of the Downs, has resulted in the Downs Committee asking for the 2015 Place and Movement Framework to be reviewed.
BWA has submitted a statement to the Special Downs Committee meeting on 20th January 2020 setting out our position on these proposals. We support the latest version of the A4018 proposals, for segregated walking and cycling along Westbury Road, and would like to engage in producing a single agreed strategy for Place and Movement across the whole of the Downs.
